In its 18th year, The Children’s Trust Family Expo once again proved why it has become one of Miami-Dade County’s most anticipated back-to-school traditions. More than 5,500 children, parents, and caregivers filled the Miami-Dade Fair & Expo on August 1 for a day packed with school readiness resources, free services, family entertainment, and opportunities to connect with organizations that support children year-round.
School supply giveaways, live student performances, literacy activities, character appearances, and free health screenings drew families from across the county. Yet this year’s event also introduced new attractions that quickly became crowd favorites. The debut of the Family Expo Scavenger Hunt transformed the convention hall into an interactive adventure, while a new College Readiness section provided valuable information for families planning beyond high school.
Throughout the day, children and parents could be seen navigating the Expo with scavenger hunt maps in hand, visiting exhibitors and collecting stickers at stations throughout the venue and outdoor mobile units. Upon completing their maps, participants received age-appropriate prizes ranging from baby utensils to baking kits and wireless speakers. Completed entries were also entered into a raffle that awarded larger prizes, including bicycles and helmets, creating excitement and encouraging families to explore every corner of the event.
For older students, the new College Readiness section offered a glimpse into life after graduation. Universities, financial aid organizations, workforce development programs, and other postsecondary partners provided information and guidance on pathways to college, trade schools, and career opportunities. The area quickly became a popular destination for high school students and parents seeking to plan for the future.
Beyond the new additions, the Family Expo continued to deliver the experiences families have come to expect. More than 100 exhibitors representing after-school programs, healthcare providers, nonprofit organizations, and community partners offered resources and services designed to support children’s success in school and beyond. Families connected with organizations providing educational support, health information, enrichment programs, and community services, all in one convenient location.
Children enjoyed a full day of entertainment that included face painting, balloon artists, hands-on activities, character meet-and-greets, and food trucks. Inside and outside the venue, families found opportunities to learn, play, and prepare for a successful school year while spending quality time together.
“The Family Expo is a trusted tradition for Miami-Dade families, bringing together the resources, services, and support children need to thrive in school and beyond,” said James R. Haj, president and CEO of The Children’s Trust. “As we celebrate the Family Expo’s 18th year, we’ve expanded opportunities for families to learn, connect, and prepare for the future. From collecting school supplies and participating in interactive activities to exploring college and career readiness resources, the Family Expo offers something for every family at every stage of a child’s educational journey.”
The success of the 18th Annual Family Expo was made possible through the support of numerous community partners and sponsors. Gold sponsors included EdFed Credit Union, Pediatric Skin Research, UHealth Children’s Care Jackson, and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Silver sponsors included Baptist Health, The Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, Uber, and Webauthor.com.
Eighteen years after its launch, the Family Expo continues to serve as one of Miami-Dade County’s signature community events, bringing together trusted resources, supportive services, and family-friendly experiences that help children and families start the school year ready to succeed.
