Coronavirus Information

While the world collectively holds its breath regarding the next bit of news about Coronavirus – COVID-19, Miami-Dade, like most places, is coming to the realization that there will likely be impacts to our everyday lives. Whether that means school or work closures, shortages of goods and services, or sicknesses that impact us directly, has yet to be seen. The situation and information coming out changes daily, sometimes hourly and even faster.

Coping with the situation can be difficult, but we should all try to approach the coming days and weeks with calm. There are many ways to reduce the potential impacts and a variety of resources to help you and your family go about your daily routines with as little impact as possible. Most importantly, a calm and measured approach to dealing with the possible spread of the virus into our community will give us the best chance to mitigate the overall impact and keep families and children as safe as possible.

Though a complete scientific understanding of the virus is still developing, there are certain precautions that the Center for Disease Control (CDC) advises will help lessen you and your family's chances of exposure. Because there is currently no vaccine for the disease, the CDC says the best way to avoid prevention is to avoid being exposed to COVID-19. As well as keeping a safe distance (6 feet) between yourself and others whenever possible, the CDC recommends:

Cleaning your hands often

  • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
  • Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

Avoid close contact

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick or display symptoms like coughing or sneezing.
  • Put distance between yourself and other people if COVID-19 is spreading in your community. This is especially important for people who are at higher risk of getting very sick.

Symptoms

The following symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure.

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath

Call your docotor if you show any of these symptoms, or have been in close contact with a person known to have COVID-19. Additionally, if you have recently traveled from an area with widespread or ongoing community spread of COVID-19 also call a doctor.

The first step to being proactive is to stay as informed as possible. As well as listening to news on television and radio, we recommend visiting the CDC on a daily basis for updates and information on the situation.

Additionally, there are a number of local and state agencies that provide information for your community, including:

The CDC has a special web page with Coronavirus information, updates and tips.
