Pages in the Park
New Initiative Brings Early Literacy to Miami-Dade Playgrounds The Children's Trust Book Club, Uplift Literacy, and Miami-Dade County Parks and Recreation
On any given afternoon, Miami-Dade's parks are filled with children climbing, running, laughing, and exploring. Now, those same parks are becoming places where children can also build vocabulary, practice letter recognition, tell stories, and strengthen the skills that lay the foundation for reading.
Pages in the Park is transforming neighborhood parks into interactive literacy experiences, turning everyday outings into opportunities to foster a lifelong love of reading. Developed through a partnership between The Children's Trust Book Club, Uplift Literacy, and Miami-Dade County Parks and Recreation, the initiative blends outdoor play with early literacy through colorful educational signs, movement-based activities, and conversation prompts that encourage families to learn together.
Research consistently shows that children develop stronger language and reading skills when they have frequent opportunities to engage with language, storytelling, and print-rich environments. Pages in the Park extends those opportunities by encouraging children and caregivers to read, talk, write, sing, and play together during everyday park visits.
Each installation features interactive activities that build vocabulary, encourage storytelling, promote letter recognition, and reinforce other early literacy skills in fun and engaging ways. Seven signs are arranged around the park playground to engage families in the connection between nature and literacy.
Just as importantly, Pages in the Park empowers parents and caregivers with simple, engaging ways to support their child's development, demonstrating that everyday moments can become meaningful opportunities for learning.
By transforming familiar community spaces into places for learning, the initiative helps make literacy a natural part of family life and helps create more opportunities for children to discover the joy of reading while building a stronger community of young readers.
