The Overtown Youth Center (OYC) Whole Child Parenting program seeks to strengthen and build resilience in children and families. The OYC's collaborative approach identifies children with adverse childhood experiences, chronic and episodic trauma and other disorders and aims to increase student engagement and maximize student potential in the area of academic success and social emotional learning. The program includes the use of a technology portal, for parents to access state of the art information in the areas of trauma, neurological disabilities and behavior modification strategies. In addition to its parental consultations and workshops, OYC will create a confidential web-based parent platform to source, ask questions and request assistance or referrals.
Program provides parents with education and skills training in healthy communication, child rearing techniques, family budgeting and household maintenance, offered in either a group or home-based setting. An emergency assistance component provides one-time emergency financial support if needed. One of the goals of the program is to help stop the generational cycles of child abuse in the community by serving families who primarily live in public housing sites.
