Youth Advisory Committee

The Children's Trust Youth Advisory Committee (YAC)

The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC), comprised of of high school students from around Miami-Dade County, is the youth "voice" of The Children's Trust and serves to strengthen leadership and advocacy skills. The 2011-12 YAC includes 46 teens from 9th to 12th grade representing 22 high schools. Following a rigorous application procress, youths attended a dynamic interview session that set the foundation for their work together: teamwork, vision and service. Our full-day retreat in early October helped to form our team and set the groundwork for the service projects to come. As we do each year, the YAC will travel to Tallahasee for Children's Week (Jan. 29-Feb. 2, 2012) for a first-hand look at the political process and to meet state legislators.

Literacy is our major theme for this year. In coming weeks and months, the YAC will be visiting centers, sites and Children's Trust programs to better understand the key components of fostering literacy and a love for reading in children. The YAC provides a meaningful avenue for youth involvement, strengthens positive perception about youth, fosters community development, and develops an increased sense of civic engagement among members as it fosters their leadership, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Additionally, the YAC advises The Children’s Trust board on issues of importance to youth in the community. A student government representative serves on The Children's Trust Board.

Participation on the YAC can be counted toward fulfilling community service requirements.

As part of their year-long exploration of youth violence and its devastating impact on young lives, 20 members of 2011 YAC participated in a day-long workshop facilitated by the Peace Education Foundation to sharpen their non-violence intervention skills and to explore the roots of conflict.

Seventeen YAC members traveled to Tallahassee to participate in Children's Week. They met legislators, held a mock debate in Senate chambers, and several members addressed the Florida Children's Cabinet as part of a town hall forum.

The 2011 YAC developed their own anti-youth violence curriculum and facilitated three sessions over consecutive weeks at four area middle schools.
