The Children's Trust Joins National Campaign Approximately 110,000 children in Miami-Dade county are uninsured. On August 4th the Children's Trust and its community partners joined the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in a national campaign to raise awareness about the need for getting children covered by health insurance. The Covering Kids & Families campaign informs families on how to prepare their children for a successful school year by putting Florida KidCare at the top of their back-to-school checklist. KidCare provides quality low-cost health insurance for kids, including children with special needs. It covers a wide variety of services including doctor visits, immunizations, prescription drugs, dental care, vision/hearing, surgery, hospitalizations, and mental health. The campaign was launched with a news conference at the Joseph Caleb Center in Miami, attended by numerous community leaders and state legislators who worked diligently during the last legislative session to restore year-round enrollment to Florida KidCare. Among those were Rep. Rene Garcia, Sen. Nan Rich, Rep. Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall and The Children's Trust CEO Modesto Abety. A health fair followed where KidCare applications, health screenings and free immunizations were offered, along with numerous fun, free activities for the whole family. 99 Jamz & Univision Radio broadcast live from the event. Similar events are scheduled in the next few weeks throughout Florida and across the country as part of a national effort to inform uninsured families that they may qualify for low-cost or free health care coverage.
