Summer camps provide kids with experiences they’ll never forget with new people, but have you ever thought about the lasting impact they have on our children's futures?
According to a 2024 Frontiers in Psychology study on the impact of camp experiences, “camps not only promote physical activity and provide enjoyment, but also help young people to develop practical and socio-emotional skills.”
Here are the top five ways summer camps teach life skills and set them up for brighter futures.
Communication
Summer camp is the perfect chance for attendees to put real school on pause and have fun with new people. Without as much technology for distraction, heading to camp encourages attendees to hone real-life communication skills that are essential in later life. These varied settings offer opportunities to listen to different perspectives, build confidence, and learn to articulate thoughts.
Independence
For many, the lack of academic and parental supervision at camp offers a chance to choose a path and focus on activities that interest them. Campers are in charge of what they do, their belongings, and how they handle new social dynamics from the moment you drop them off. Learning independence as early as possible prepares kids for a future outside the home.
Teamwork
Children aren’t born team players. It is a skill that develops over time through practice and is vital for building good relationships and achieving professional success later in life. Summer camp can lay the groundwork for lifelong team players by teaching kids empathy, how to resolve conflict to reach a shared goal, and accountability in team settings.
Problem-solving
Kids spend a lot of time having life’s problems solved for them, from how they’re getting to school to what they’re eating for dinner. And, with the rise of technology, problem-solving skills are getting worse for adults, too. Learning problem-solving skills at summer camp, away from screens, is a great way for kids to stand out from the crowd. These skills come from camp activities like building unique objects from provided resources, playing strategy games, and making up their own stories to perform on stage together.
The start of something bigger
Has your kid always been a performer, but never had the opportunity to tread the boards of a real theater? There’s a camp for that. What about the kid who loves science class and never wants it to end? There’s a camp for that, too. And what about the kid who has always been looking for “their crowd,” but hasn’t found it at school? Well, there’s a camp for that, too.
Summer camp could be the start of something incredible that develops into a future career or a hobby that can last a lifetime. There’s no telling what they might learn when the school bell rings for summer, and the doors swing open for summer camp.
