Stories About UsPerforming Arts Centers Shine at Children's Trust Family ExpoPublished Monday, June 01, 2009From examiner.com The Children’s Trust Family Expo held on May 30 provided parents with direct access to educational, health and social services in a festive atmosphere. It also offered children’s performing arts centers a platform to showcase their emerging talent. These children’s organizations funded in part by the Children’s Trust performed at the Miami-Dade County Fair & Expo Center. The PlayGround Theatre, The Roxy Theatre Group, Inc. and the Greater Miami Youth Symphony were among the performing arts centers to draw large crowds to their performances. The actors from the The PlayGround Theatre’s Inanna and the Huluppu Tree entertained the audience with their lively dancing and singing. Kids were invited to dance on the stage and everyone n the audience was welcomed to sing along with them. My family and I saw Inanna and the Huluppu Tree a couple of weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s the type of children’s theater that both children and adults can enjoy due to the quality of acting and costumes. Last season, The PlayGround Theatre’s Education and Community Outreach Program enabled over 20,000 underserved children and families to see its performances. It distributes free tickets through public schools, charities, and community organizations. The PlayGround Theatre also provided full scholarships to half of the campers participating in Musical Theatre Summer Camp 2008. The Roxy Theatre Group (RTG) delighted the audience with a lovely duet and a spirited tap dance routine. The children performed beautifully and were a big hit with the crowd. The Roxy Theatre Group is a performing arts organization geared toward children ages 3 to 17 years old that offers classes in dance, drama and voice. RTG also runs an after-school program and the popular Camp Entertainment! summer camp, all of which culminate in shows. Some of the RTG dancers have participated in numerous local, regional and national competitions and events. The Greater Miami Youth Symphony followed with an entertaining program performed by young violinists. The children demonstrated skill with the violin as they performed samples from a variety of works. GMYS is an independent five-level orchestra program dedicated to training young musicians between 5 and 18 years of age. It was conceived as a complementary facet to musical instruction in the schools. GMYS was created to foster a love of music in young people and to enrich the cultural life of the community, which it still accomplishes today. |
