The Children's Trust requires all funded providers to fully participate in childhood injury prevention capacity-building efforts facilitated by The Public Health Trust's Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Miami®, including participation in at least one training session relevant to the population being served, and distribution of parent education materials on home, water, car and bicycle safety.
AVAILABLE TRAININGS Certification - Car Passenger Safety (CPS) Training: The national standardized child passenger safety technician certification course is four days long (32 hours) and combines classroom instruction, hands-on work with car seats and vehicles, and a community safety seat checkup event. At the checkup event, students demonstrate skills learned during class, following event procedures and instructions, proper use and installation of child restraints and safety belts and the ability to teach parents and caregivers how to properly protect their family on the road. The car seats for the event will be provided by Injury Free Coalition. Successful completion of this course certifies the individual as a CPS technician for two years. Passenger Safety Education: Focusing primarily on restraint and passenger safety, these trainings and materials will be offered to community providers to increase their capacity in passenger safety (appropriate use of car seats and booster seats, safe transport of children in motor vehicles, the importance of a safe ride for every ride and how to implement new parent awareness/safe pick up and drop off policies). Trainings will be held throughout the contract year starting in November 2011. Each session typically lasts up to 2 hours but can be adapted. These trainings can be coordinated with passenger safety clinics either for staff families or families served by the provider. Such Clinics cement learning, provide contact with extended family and assure an appropriate fit, with hands-on training. Teen Driver and passenger training: The Injury Free Coalition will use Teen Driving Source, CHOP (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia) -developed materials and the "Enhancing Education To Keep Teens Safe On The Road," educational resources designed for parents and educators about teen experiences, expectations and needs to improve safety. These research-based recommendations are aimed at parents and educators rather than teens themselves. Thus, in this case, parents who are trained in these modules serve as the "trainers" of their children. Training will be available on at least a monthly basis throughout the Car Seat Inspections and Passenger Safety for parents/caregivers: Training for parents/caregivers and service providers on how to properly install car seats and transport children safely in motor vehicles. Families in need of car seats, with defective or recalled seats, or with the wrong seat for their child will be offered a new car seat.
