Program Quality Assessment: School-Age Care Environment Rating Scale (SACERS) (9:00 AM)

In this workshop, participants will learn how to evaluate the quality of their OOS program using the SACERS, a comprehensive rating scale that targets six (6) areas of OOS programs: Space & Furnishings; Health & Safety; Activities; Interactions; Program Structure; and Staff Development. Participants will learn how to identify areas that need improvement as well as how to recognize program strengths.

All Trust-funded OOS agencies are required to evaluate their programs using this research-based rating scale. Additional trainings by Project RISE are being developed to target specific areas of the SACERS.

This two-hour session will provide participants with opportunity to review their draft and completed plans with additional technical assistance for thoroughness and action steps to a final plan. This is a reviewing/working session. Effective planning for sustainability involves building an ongoing planning and program operations structure to help ensure that program leaders have the resources they will need to operate successfully over time. This workshop aims to assist participants in reviewing and editing their completed sustainability plans. Come prepared to edit and receive feedback about the viability of your plan.

Class Description:
The new training will be an instructor guided, hands-on training using laptop computers and a practice database. All necessary materials, laptops, etc. will be provided for the training. Since the course is hands-on, there are 12 spots available for each class. Each provider that registers for this training may bring up to 2 additional participants for a total of 3 per provider, per class.

Almost all OOS programs require some level of academic activity that includes reading. This workshop will train you on how to use the One-Minute Oral Reading Fluency Measure. This measure can be used with all age groups, cultures, and ability levels. All Children's Trust funded programs will begin using the One-Minute Oral Reading Fluency Measure this summer, so participation in this workshop is strongly encouraged.

Intervention: How To Improve Oral Reading Fluency (1:00 PM)
In this workshop, providers will learn how to use ORF data to not only determine children’s current reading levels and identify those reading below their grade level, but also to select the appropriate teaching strategies to improve overall reading fluency. By using research-supported teaching strategies, oral reading fluency can actually be improved, often with a positive impact on future gains in academic achievement. This workshop is the first step to incorporating a systematic approach to improving reading in OOS programs.

Fitness Outcome: PACER (a.k.a. The “Beep” Test) (1:00 PM)
In this active workshop, participants will learn how to administer and score the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (PACER), also known as the “Beep” test. This modified shuttle run is a valid measure of endurance and overall fitness and is being adopted as the fitness outcome for The Children’s Trust. A select group of Trust-funded agencies are required to administer this fun, research-based assessment during the ’08-’09 school year, but all can attend . Participants will also receive the materials needed to administer the PACER at no cost from Project RISE.

Remember to wear sneakers!
