Fieber, Ph.D., associate professor at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmostpheric Science, for an inside look at her research on Aplysia and a personal encounter with sea hares. The National Resource for Aplysia on the campus of the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science is the only place in the world where sea slugs, Aplysia californica are cultured and raised for research purposes. The simple design of the brain of Aplysia makes it a good research subject that can shed light on how our own brains work. Aplysia from the facility are used in experiments that help us to understand how we learn and what memories are. Cost: $5 per session. Each session includes access to the lecture, hands-on demonstrations, exhibit tours and breakfast.

Career Fair And Back To School Supply Givaway (2:00 pm)
Organization: Young Dreams Community Outreach
The event will consist of multiple career stations such as Fireman, Policeman, Paramedic, Photographer, Make up Artist, Fashion Designer, Artist, Masseuse, and many more, which will motivate children to enchance their education while expiriencing on-hand activities. The children will then recieve a back to school supply package, back pack, and reading material collected from our Donate-A-Book drive. We will also have live music, food, raffles & games.

August 14 – Orlando August 21 – Tallahassee August 28 – Miami Gardens
In collaboration with the Agency for Workforce Innovation’s Office of Early Learning, the ELC of Orange County, the ELC of the Big Bend and the ELC of Miami-Dade Monroe counties are pleased to present three Regional School-Age Care Quality Meetings. These meetings, designed for Afterschool Site Directors & Administrators, Afterschool Providers, and Early Learning Coalition Staff/Trainers, will provide updates on afterschool projects and initiatives happening Statewide, as well as feature a 5-hour in-service training. Each meeting will provide identical information and training. Please register at least one week prior to your selected training date. The cost of the training is FREE; however you must pre-register. Please direct your questions and registration to the Early Learning Coalition in the county you select to attend.
Who should register to attend: Afterschool program directors and staff of all venues (Boys & Girls Clubs, child care centers, faith-based programs, family child care providers, Parks & Recreation programs, 21stCCLC programs, School-based programs, YMCAs, etc.), as well as Early Learning Coalition staff/trainers.
Regional School-Age Care Quality Meeting Training Hours: Saturdays listed above, 9:30am – 3:30pm, with a one hour lunch break, on own. Please arrive by 9am.
Presentation Information: Jenn Faber, State School-Age Services Coordinator at AWI-OEL, will present a brief Afterschool Update, along with information on Standards for Quality Afterschool Programs, Lesson Planning for Educational Outcomes, Positive Communication with School-agers, Helpful Homework Hints and Family/Community Involvement.
