Program Quality Assessment: School-Age Care Environment Rating Scale (SACERS) (10:00 am)
In this workshop, participants will learn how to evaluate the quality of their OOS program using the SACERS, a comprehensive rating scale that targets six (6) areas of OOS programs: Space & Furnishings; Health & Safety; Activities; Interactions; Program Structure; and Staff Development. Participants will learn how to identify areas that need improvement as well as how to recognize program strengths. All Trust-funded OOS agencies are required to evaluate their programs using this research-based rating scale. Additional trainings by Project RISE are being developed to target specific areas of the SACERS. Walk Safe Research Grant Presentation (2:30 pm)

The purpose is to reduce pediatric pedestrian injury and fatality by providing Walk Safe, an elementary school-based evaluated pedestrian injury prevention program. This is a multi-agency program with the primary focus being safety education provided in the classroom, engineering modifications around the elementary schools, and enforcement. In addition to the teacher training, support of teacher implementation of training in the classroom, and safety surveys to identify engineering modifications and traffic law enforcement interventions needed, the project conducted research and ongoing data collection regarding pediatric pedestrian injuries. The 1st year of this research grant funded by The Trust included a training component implemented in 32 elementary schools in District 1, and during Year 2 the training and expanded observational research was implemented in 16 elementary schools in Little Havana and Overtown.

Intervention: How To Improve Oral Reading Fluency (2:00 pm)
In this workshop, providers will learn how to use ORF data to not only determine children’s current reading levels and identify those reading below their grade level, but also to select the appropriate teaching strategies to improve overall reading fluency. Fitness Outcome: PACER (a.k.a. The “Beep” Test) (2:00 pm)
In this active workshop, participants will learn how to administer and score the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (PACER), also known as the “Beep” test. This modified shuttle run is a valid measure of endurance and overall fitness and is being adopted as the fitness outcome for The Children’s Trust. A select group of Trust-funded agencies are required to administer this fun, research-based assessment during the ’08-’09 school year, but all can attend . Pachanga! (7:00 pm)
Pachanga! sponsored by the Parents Speak Up National Campaign In this community event parents are empowered to talk to their children about sex and the value of waiting through motivational speaking and interactive activities. Parents who attend this evening event will have the chance to make their teens aware of the expectations and values their parents have for them. Furthermore, this is a great opportunity for parents to verbalize, in a positive, friendly, and educational setting, their love, appreciation, and affection for their children. After the 50 minute program, Pachanga! participants enjoy a dinner that ends with a raffle of gifts for the entire family. Music is played during the dinner at the Pachanga!. Expected attendance for this event is 100 parents and their preteens and teens. Participants of the community events take home the Committed Parent packet, which includes the PSUNC collateral materials, a reference to www.4parents.gov, and are invited to attend a local Parents Speak Up workshop. Abstinence Between Strong Teens (ABST) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization firmly committed to serving the Hispanic community in Miami, FL by offering educational services that foster healthy lifestyles for adolescents and parents. These include abstinence education, character development, and parenting skills.
